You've dreamed of writing a kid's book. Maybe you even have an idea.

But somehow you haven't managed to actually make it happen. We get it -- writing for kid's seems simple...until you try it. All of a sudden you might find yourself wondering:

  • How do I turn my idea into a cohesive story?

  • How do I tell a whole story in less than 750 words?

  • How do I strike the balance between simplicity and depth for young readers?

  • What kind of language is appropriate?

  • How do create memorable characters in such a short format?

We get it, because we've been there!

Hi. We're Jason Gruhl and Albert Strasser, and between us we have over 15 published works in children's literature across five different publishing houses. In other words: we've made every mistake in the book (and lived to tell the tale...and write more books!) Now we've taken everything we learned the hard way and turned it into a step-by-step process for you.

Why? Because we truly believe that children's stories have the power to change the world, and yours could be one that your kids, grandkids, or community desperately need. Don't wait! Write your story!

"This 6-week journey was jam-packed with great information! Jason and Albert answered questions I didn’t even know to ask. So rich and deeply supportive — paired with a generosity of spirit as teachers. I finished one story and am well on my way to 3 more!" — Sonny C.

"The Children’s Book Writing Workshop was such a great structured space for navigating a seed of thought to realizing that my words were real. I am so happy to have had this golden opportunity to learn from writers who are from the field and collaborate with other participants." — Molly Snider

"Jason and Albert’s class was inspiring and fun. I left each class with renewed energy to actualize a story that had been floating in my head for years. Thank you for the support in putting it in writing, advice on publishing, and helpful thoughts on illustration." — Carly Lovejoy

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the live calls?
The live workshops happen once per week on Mondays from 5:30-7 pm PST.

What if I can’t attend a live call?
No problem at all. Every session is recorded and uploaded within 24 hours. You’ll have full access to all replays and can watch whenever it works for you.

I’ve never written a book before. Is this course right for me?
Yes. This course is designed specifically for people who are starting from zero. You don’t need any prior experience with writing or publishing. We’ll walk you through every step.

What if I don’t have a story idea yet?
That’s actually very common. In the early weeks, we’ll help you spark ideas, clarify your characters, and build out your story framework. Many students start with just a vague concept (or no idea at all) and leave with a complete manuscript.

How much time will I need to commit each week?
Set aside 90 minutes for the live workshop each week. Outside of class, most students spend 1 to 2 additional hours applying what they’ve learned and working on their book. But it's really up to you!

Will you help me with publishing?
While this course isn't specifically oriented to publishing, we will provide lots of information about the publishing process, including traditional publishing and self-publishing.

What kind of feedback will I receive?
You’ll have opportunities to share your work during the live sessions, ask questions, and receive direct feedback from both Jason and Albert throughout the program.

Is there a community aspect?
Yes. You’ll be part of a private group of fellow aspiring authors. The community is supportive, encouraging, and a great place to exchange ideas and celebrate progress.

Do I need any special technology to participate?
Not at all. If you can click a Zoom link, you’re good to go. We’ve made everything as simple and user-friendly as possible.

"We aren't made from cells or atoms. We are made from stories."

~Mia Couto

Stories are how we make sense of the world, and children's stories have the power to change the course of a child's life. YOU may be carrying the very story that the world needs right now. So do us all a favor and write it!
